Taiwan Pitch brings together international creative talent from various fields and specialist backgrounds to come to Taiwan, inviting them to take this land as their source of inspiration and field of creation, and enriching their artistic and creative energy through practical experience. Today, we are announcing the first headliner of this program: Japanese artist and designer, Asao Tokolo. Given the ongoing pandemic and war in Ukraine, Asao Tokolo hopes to invite the people of Taiwan to create “Tokolo Orizuru” together using his original origami crane folding method. The exhibit aims to turn the heart’s anxieties into blessings and embody the idea of working together and connecting minds.

Japanese artist Asao Tokolo’s first visit to Taiwan.

Asao Tokolo has been invited by Taiwan Pitch, Eslite Foundation for Culture and Arts, and the General Association of Chinese Culture (GACC) to come to Taiwan to create and curate an art and design exhibition. Asao Tokolo is accustomed to using principles of geometric design in his works. He is able to transform simple patterns and structures into myriad jaw-dropping works. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games emblems are such works where he uses a harmonized checkered pattern in their construction. Feeling the fracture and collapse of society caused by natural disasters, wars, epidemics, and other events, Tokolo’s creative process is characterized by a fundamental humanistic care, adhering to the idea that personal creation is an act of inner peace. Continuing with the theme of CONNECT, he has created numerous patterns and designs. He has also expanded into other fields such as architecture, graphic design, fashion design, and more, hoping to create a wide range of “connectable items” that bring comfort and strength to people around the world who feel hopeless in the aftermath of disasters.

What’s most special about this new exhibition is that Tokolo will be coming to Taiwan for the sole purpose of creating the artworks onsite and collaborating with the public on “Tokolo Orizuru”. These pieces will be displayed in the Asao TOKOLO [CONNECT] exhibition. A short documentary film will also be made about the creative process of this exhibition and will air on the TaiwanPlus streaming platform for the global audience. We are excited to share the diverse and amazing stories of Taiwan through the artist’s unique perspective; and the GACC looks forward to strengthening Taiwan’s friendship with Japan and inspiring creativity.
